Copper has been used in electric wiring since the invention of the electromagnet and the telegraph in the 1820s. Of the 15,000 tons of copper mined annually, roughly half is used to manufacture electrical wire and cable conductors. One of my first jobs was designing cables for the ultrasound industry, where I worked with 38 to 42 AWG copper conductor in cables containing anywhere from 96 to 528 coaxes.
